Legalize Recreational Marijuana in New York

We support the emergence of a new, well-regulated and inclusive marijuana industry that is rooted in providing safe access to an already widely-used substance that is less dangerous than alcohol and tobacco and has been proven to have substantial medicinal uses. And we call for an end to the continued waste of state resources for the purposes of enforcing marijuana prohibition for the reasons enumerated below.

Ten states and Washington D.C. have all legalized adult use of recreational marijuana. New York is lagging behind.

Legalization would let the state better control licensing, ensure quality control and therefore consumer protection and they could set age and quantity restrictions. Plus, the state would get millions in tax revenue every single year.

Around 17,500 people are arrested each year on marijuana possession charges in New York City alone. Research has found that there is no good evidence that marijuana arrests in New York City are associated with reductions in crime.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that he supports marijuana legalization in the state and made it a legislative priority in 2019.

Now is the time for New York State to finally legalize recreational marijuana! Sign on to add your voice to this petition!
